Adele’s Bond Single "Skyfall" Falls Early

Anyone who’s listened to Adele’s album 21 (roughly the 24,000,000 of us who bought a copy worldwide since its release), knows that she can tell a story with a song.

Which is why the British signer was the perfect choice to serenade audiences of the next Bond movie, Skyfall, with its signature tune of the same name—about two minutes of which has already quietly fallen from the celestial skies for us to listen to like secret agents online.

It’s only 1 minute and 46 seconds long—not enough to confidently form an opinion on it—but from what’s available here, “Skyfall” sounds like a return to James Bond form: lush and cinematic. It also sounds like Adele is only just taking her time and slowly building up here, which also only fuels anticipation to hear the rest of when its released in full on Friday.

Bond themes of recent memory have been received to mixed fanfare. Alicia Keys and Jack White’s “Another Way to Die” for Quantum of Solace was a clashy tune, whereas Adele’s already sounds like a no-nonsense classic in comparison. I especially love that film noir orchestration around the 40-second mark of the snippet that immediately brings to mind the dark and sexy undertones of Portishead. It’s not even the whole song, but guarantee this’ll be an Academy Award contender in the “Best Original Song” category.

It’s also the first original song from Adele since her sophomore album, which swept this past Grammy Awards ceremony.
