If there's one thing we can expect from Akon, it's to expect the unexpected. For his upcoming album Freedom, Akon is steering in a new direction. The album is different than anything else he's released in that it has an internationally sound.
Hollyscoop caught up with Akon at the studio for an exclusive listening party, where he talked to us about his inspiration, taking a new direction, and why he chose to release a dance album.
In regards to taking a new direction for his upcoming album Freedom, Akon told Hollyscoop, “A lot of artists are so locked up in their street cred(ability) and too busy acting tough or being a thug. As a person and as a man, you should never be judged by what you do. Nobody can judge me for what I do.
"I can make a record with Gwen Stefani today and then make a record with 50 Cent tomorrow because I’m comfortable with living in my own skin," he said.
He added, "I don’t have to prove anything to anybody as far as my history or what I’ve done. At the end of the day you’ve got to be a man and be happy with what it is you do and be comfortable in your own skin. Only thing is when you’re dealing with urban music, everybody has this urge to be “hard” all the time. Don’t smile in your pictures. And after a while it’s like what are you proving and who are you proving it to? Just have fun with it. It’s an opportunity that we all have, that’s getting us off the hook. Just be happy that you’re doing it. Let’s just have fun with it.”
In regards to releasing a dance/UK style music into the USA, Akon said: “It’s only risky here in the US. And the US is only a small part of the rest of the world. So I could not sell a record here at all and sell 2 million over seas. So it’s really about if they are willing to take it and open up to it.”
