Alicia Keys and Bonnie Raitt have been lined up for some time to pay a performance tribute to Etta James at the 2012 Grammy Awards.

But both singers also honored the now late Whitney Houston at the Grammys.

Keys took the stage and said: "As we were reminded just yesterday, when a truly great artist leaves us, their legacy lives on."

From there, the two sang Etta James' hit 'Sunday Kind of Love.'

"We love you, Etta! We love you, Whitney! We'll never forget you," the two said at the conclusion of the performance.

Whitney was scheduled to attend the Grammy Awards, and she was getting ready for the Clive Davis annual pre-Grammy party at the time of her death.

Wearing all black, host LL Cool J told the audience: "There is no way around this. We've had a death in our family."

The rapper then read a prayer for Whitney.

"Heavenly father, we thank you for sharing our sister Whitney with us," he said. "Though she is gone too soon, we remain truly blessed to have been touched by her beautiful spirit."

LL Cool J then showed a clip of Houston performing her hit, 'I Will Always Love You' at a past Grammy Award show.

"I Will Always Love You." LL Cool said afterward: "Whitney, we will always love you."

During his performance of 'Runaway Baby,' Burno Mars said:

"Tonight we're celebrating. Tonight we're celebrating the beautiful Miss Whitney Houston."
