Idol Alum Syesha Mercado to Star in Dreamgirls on Broadway

Broadway seems to be where a lot of past Idol contestants end up at one point or another. And the latest Idol alum to take her act to the stage is Syesha Mercado.

Syesha wowed us during American Idol season 7, and made it to the #3 spot in the competition behind David Archuleta and David Cook. We haven’t heard much from her since then, except for the fact that she’s reportedly working on a pop/R&B album.

But today it was announced that Syesha will be heading to Broadway! She’s just been cast as Deena Jones in the stage production of Dreamgirls. The role of Deena was made famous by Beyonce, who co-starred with Jennifer Hudson in the movie version.

The production will open in New York City this November at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, and will then go on a national tour. We can’t wait to see her in this role! We loved her on Idol!
