This month marks the one-year anniversary of the “Rehab” singer’s untimely death and to honor her legacy, the Amy Winehouse Foundation continues to give back.
Amy’s foundation will help construct a Noah’s Ark children’s hospice care center in north London. The singer’s father Mitch Winehouse has been heading the effort.
According to the online magazine NME, the hospice location is tied to Amy’s roots.
"There is no children's hospice covering Camden, Islington, Enfield,” said Mitch. “That's where Amy lived and grew up. They've bought the land, we're gonna help them build it."
The Amy Winehouse Foundation is a charitable trust that Amy’s family set up in her name at the time of her death. The goal is to provide assistance and support "young people, especially those who are in need by reason of ill health, disability, financial disadvantage or addiction.”
Winehouse was found dead in her home from alcohol poisoning not far from the site where the hospice center will be located. The artist had a long history of battling drug and alcohol addiction.
In addition to the care center, the foundation will also fund a series of scholarships for the Sylvia Young Theatre School where Amy studied and made donations of more than $42,000.
Over in the States, Mitch plans to help underprivileged children in New Orleans through the foundation by creating a music workshop and a creating a Jazz Orchestra for the city. The effort has a special place in the father’s heart.
“I remember sitting with [Amy] when Hurricane Katrina happened in 2005, and she said, "This is terrible, Dad'. So I had a pretty good idea of what we were going to do in the States.”
