Artist of the Week: Kelley James

Mix together a laidback mix of acoustic guitars, hip-hop beats, and sentimental lyrics, and you have a blended margarita of a musician that is singer-songwriter Kelley James.

With concise breezy melodies and smooth freestyle rap phrasing in nearly every verse, his relaxing brand of music just makes you want to curl up with a cold bottle of Corona and watch boxed sets of The O.C.. Basically, Travie McCoy should hit him up so they can write next summer’s “Billionaire.” Like, maybe you should all “@TravieMcCoy @YourBoyKJ” and get this Twitter campaign started?

Until then, Kelley’s “Summertime On My Mind” should hold us all over—a beach tune so airy and relaxed it almost sounds improvised.

Kelley’s previous five albums and EPs have caught the attention of other like-minded artists. Since 2007 he’s shared stages with Shwayze, Sara Bareilles, T-Pain, Tyrone Wells, LMFAO, Jason Derulo, O.A.R., Mike Posner, and others.

A favorite from his 2009 Break Free album is “Falling for You,” which has some earnest Ryan Cabrera-strumming vibes with a slow diving change up in the chord progression right at the chorus that could make Gavin DeGraw stop in his ebony-and-ivory tracks and smile.

Then there’s the pitch-perfect “Perfect to Me” off the 2011 release The Recent Future that’ll have you dazedreaming, thinking about sippin’ Capri-Suns while taking a lazy Saturday drive on PCH with whoever you’re dating or just hopelessly crushing on at the moment.

Kelley’s currently on tour through the arid American southwest and keeping summer on everyone’s minds this fall.
