The theater community is a little shocked by casting, since the role was rumored to be going to former IdolTamyra Gray or Anika Noni Rose. But Ashanti landed it!
The revival will be a part of Encores! Summer Starts series in New York City. The musical will play June 12th through July 5th.
We think Ashanti is great for this role! She’s been very successful as both an musician and an actress, and this combines her two loves.

Nelly, who has been dating Ashanti for five years, is ready to make her his wife, but her mother Tina Douglas is making him have second thoughts.
According to Bossip.com, “Tina sticks her nose in everything because she’s also Ashanti’s manager,” the source added, “She’s always pushing Ashanti to make more money, to always look great. It stresses her out, and Nelly doesn’t like that.”
“Before he makes her his wife,” adds the source, “Nelly wants to know that Ashanti can make decisions on her own.”
