If you’ve been on the internet lately, chances are you’ve heard of new music artist Azealia Banks, or at least seen her name flash across the screen somewhere, sometime.
Azealia is the “next big thing” and pardon the cliché but there was a time when Lady Gaga was “the next big thing” and look where she’s at now.
The only way I can describe Azealia Banks is that she is kind of like a cross between Nicki Minaj (because she raps), MIA (because she has swagger), and Janelle Monae (because she has a unique singing voice) oh and then throw all that over an electro track.
I guess you would call Azealia a “hip hop” artist, but she’s much more than that. Her talk-sing-rap style soars across at lightning speed, and she can actually sing too. But instead of her songs sitting atop hip-hop beats, she’s backed by electro/house/dance music.
She’s kind of what Nicki Minaj aspires to be, but totally unique. Basically, if Azealia Banks went to your high school, you would never be cool enough to hang out with her. Wearing denim shorts and a Mickey Mouse sweater in her music video for “212” she shouts obscenities, all while smiling innocently with Dorothy braids in her hair.
Azealia has been blowing up online, but will probably make her mainstream domination after her appearance at Coachella this month.
The New York native went to La Guardia Performing Arts School and like Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj, grew up in the world of theater, but ditched it for a rap career.
So far, big artists have taken note of her. Her music was recently played at both Karl Lagerfeld and Thierry Mugler fashion Mugler shows and she is about to collaborate with Diplo, Scissor Sisters and MIA.
