In December 2009, Alicia released her fourth studio album The Element of Freedom which included a duet with Beyonce titled “Put It In a Love Song”—an up tempo track with a female empowerment message that was pretty much like Alicia’s version of “Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It) that was written and produced with Alicia’s hubby musician Swizz Beats.
The duo took the tune down to Rio de Janeiro to shoot a video for it. A preview of it was put together and released online that portrayed Alicia and Beyonce looking muito sensual as they dance and sang it up in the colorful streets of Brazil.
Then that was it—they never released the video!
That was nearly three years ago, and now we finally have an explanation…sort of. Alicia, whose new album Girl on Fire is out this November, is finally revisiting the mystery to explain just what happened to Essence.com:
“Sometimes with creative things [it] all comes together and it's [makes perfection kissing noise] and sometimes things almost come together and it's better to just leave it. So we love that song. We had a ball shooting the video. It just so happens that the whole thing, for some reason or another, didn't quite come together so we just decided to leave it. And that's what happened.”
The unreleased video was shot by Melina Matsoukas—the same Melina who directed Rihanna’s “We Found Love” and Christina Aguilera’s newest “Your Body”—so you know it’s a crisp, energetic, retro delight.
