Carly Rae Jepsen: 'Call Me Maybe' As About Low Self-Esteem

If you have a pulse, then you know all the words to inescapable song of the summer “Call Me Maybe.” But while Carly Rae Jepsen took over your cerebellum, puppeteering your mouth, tongue, and all other general motor skills against your will (the only explanation), have you even considered what the lyrics actually mean?

“I think it’s just my type of, the way I would talk about it,” Carly said with a no doubt shy laugh to The Hollywood Reporter over the weekend at Comedy Central’s “Night of Too Many Stars” in New York City. “I’m not overly confident in love. I’d probably be more coy about it, I guess, just like, ‘Call me, maybe? If you want to?’”

So that fun and flirty catchphrase you were using all quirky and ironically at the bars lately isn’t as endearingly outgoing as you thought? It was actually ripped straight out of the Dating for Introverts manual? It’s about being as assertive in dating as this sentence? With all the question marks attached? Are you reading me, maybe?

While I was hoping they’d specifically ask how the hell “Before you came into my life, I missed you so, so bad” makes any sense, I remembered this is pop music rocket science, so let’s just leave it to the guys at NASA who orchestrated the space jump.

Interestingly, this “insecure” theme may be a trend in current teen Top 40. Consider the equally complicated lyric “You don’t know you’re beautiful / Oh oh / That’s what makes you beautiful” from fellow teen sensation’s One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful,” which translated with the help of my therapist means, “You don’t think you deserve me AND I LOVE THAT.”

So yeah, maybe let’s all steer clear from the superficially harmless pop music and pick up the Deepak Chopra, maybe?
