The Video Music Awards will kick off in style.

Taking a break from her new career as a judge on FOX’s “The X Factor,” Demi Lovato will take on the task of opening the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards Pre-Show. The 20-year-oldsuperstar will start the show, performing her hit “Give Your Heart a Break.”

Demi, who is an understandable choice with all the press she’s getting lately, was admittedly a little surprised to be chosen for the role. “I'm so excited to perform at the VMA preshow. I can't believe it!” she said.

For the show,MTV is turning the red carpet into an all out event. A two-story structure will house nominees, presenters and performers as they arrive and get interviewed at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

The pre-show, which starts at 7 p.m. ET/PT, will lead into the show that will feature acts from other big names like Alicia Keys, P!nk, Green Day, Taylor Swift, One Direction, Rihanna and Frank Ocean.

In addition to the traditional honors of the ceremony, a brand new category will be featured in this year’s music-fueled event for “Most Share-Worthy Video.” The category is aimed at honoring the artists and groups who have spawned the most video recreations, lipdubs, and alternative versions.

Uh, “Call Me Maybe,” anyone…

Other than the obvious nominee (and probably winner) of Carly Rae Jepsen, nominations for the new category are One Direction, “What Makes You Beautiful,” Beyoncé, “Countdown,” Justin Bieber, “Boyfriend” and Goyte, “Somebody That I Used to Know.”

The awards will be hosted by comedian Kevin Hart and DJ Calvin Harris, who is nominated for “Best Electronic Music Video” will provide the transitional tunes. The 2012 MTV Video Music Awards kick off officially on September 6 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
