In what looks like the perfect single for a new season, the single art work for “Begin Again” features Taylor Swift bathing in natural autumn lighting, sitting in what looks something like page 17 of a Pottery Barn catalog, as she strums her guitar strings on the edge of a Queen size bed and ruminates on the male subject of her next love song.
But before we go down this well traveled road for the singer-songwriter, let’s clear one thing up: When Tay Tay performed “Begin Again” predecessor “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” at the iHeart Radio music festival this past weekend she didn’t call out her former flame Jake Gyllenhaal.
Midway through the set, some believe they heard the singer say, “Jake, it’s your turn!” If you listen to it again, though, it’s pretty loud and clear that she says, “Las Vegas, it’s your turn!”
Naturally, because there was so much speculation combined with Taylor’s history for penning ballads and anthems about past relationships and ex-es (looking at you Joe Jonas and Taylor Lautner), that meant it was everyone’s turn to misinterpret the shout out and get it twisted.
Hear it again here at the 3-minute mark and decide for yourself:
We all good? Great! Now, we are never ever going to revisit this topic again.
We’d rather just focus on Taylor’s next single, which has a much more mellow country vibe and, duh, other lyrics for us to read way into like, “Turn the lock and put my headphones on / He always said he didn’t get this song, but I do”. Something tells me this one may also be about the same dude as “WANEGBT” which has the reminiscent line (and one of my favorite pop lyrics of the summer): “And you will hide away and find your piece of mind / With some indie record that’s much cooler than mine.”
