Madonna may have played the Super Bowl, but Duran Duran just scored the Olympics gig.

The English rock band will be representing their home country this year at the opening ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics on July 27 at Hyde Park in London.

Performances by bands from each of the four nations of the UK will be present at the ceremony. Along with Duran Duran, headliners include Northern Island’s Snow Patrol, Stereophonics of Wales, and Paolo Nutini of Scotland.

If 2008’s Beijing numbers are any indication, the bands will be playing for about 15 percent of the world’s population.

That’s nearly 4 billion (with a capital “B”) people. No pressure, though…

“Performing to so many people on the most exciting day in sport for Great Britain will be one of the highlights of the last decade for us," said Duran Duran's front man Simon Le Bon told the BBC.

Formed in Birmingham, England, Duran Duran is famous for their new wave, pop rock sound The band draws on influences like David Bowie and Roxy Music.

Hits like “The Reflex” and “Notorious” – later featured in the Notorious B.I.G. song – earned the group popularity on both British and US charts throughout the 80s and early 90s. Their latest album Red Carpet was released in 2007.

The group feels honored to play at the ceremony, acting not only as a symbol of England, but rock music itself.

“We couldn't be more proud,” said Le Bon. “Seeing the torch being lit on the big screens before hitting the stage in this iconic location will be a great experience… We simply can't wait."

Tickets for the opening ceremony go on sale in England on May 4 at 09:00 BST.
