Fiona Apple Makes Her Return at SXSW

Fiona Apple is making a comeback? You don’t say! Remember her? Her breakout single “Criminal” came out when I was like 10, but I still sang that song at the top of my lungs like I totally “got it.” Are Fiona Apple fans ready to embrace her again after so many years?

Fiona stopped by South By Southwest yesterday for her first live performance in nearly 5 years. Heck, her last album release was 7 years ago.

She played songs off her new album and a few old favorites like, “Criminal,” “Fast As You Can” and “Sleep to Dream.”

Her new stuff is good, it’s very Fiona Apple-ish, you know, like moody piano sounds and Fiona’s voice sounding like a cross between a cat in heat and a really good but really sad singer.

Her new album will supposedly be released in June and has quite a mouthful of a name. She’s calling her fourth album, “The Idler Wheel is wiser than the Driver of the Screw, and Whipping Cords will serve you more than Ropes will ever do.”

Her show was one of the most eagerly anticipated shows at SXSW, probably because she’s been off the music scene for so long and people were curious about her, but it’s 2012…do we still like the kind of music that was cool in 1996? I mean, if that were true then Alanis Morissette and Dave Matthews would still be popular and they are not…so…I’m just saying it’s 2012 and we listen to Adele and Rihanna now. Okay?

Apple will play one more show at SXSW and is doing a short eight-date tour in Chicago next week.
