Nothing tastes quite like the ‘80s… The epic British duo that is Wham! might be getting back together. They also might not be.
Now that George Michael is releasing new music it seems like the perfect time to revisit the idea of a reunion with Andrew Ridgeley. And apparently we’re not the only ones who think so. However, competing reports are blurring the line of truth.
UK’s Daily Mirror broke the news that group was talks of a reboot.
“George and Andrew have often said their Club Tropicana days are well behind them,” a source told Mirror. "But seeing as their anniversary coincides with George releasing new material, it’s one of those ‘now or never’ moments.”
Michael’s new single “White Light” is slated for a June 29th release. The arrival of the new track coincides the duet’s 30-year anniversary since they first formed in 1982.
When Wham! split in 1986, Michael immediately went on to become a solo hit with unforgettable tunes like “Careless Whisper” and “A Different Corner.”
Earlier this week, Michael confirmed that the timing of his new release was no accident.
“On June 29 it will be 30 years to the day that Wham Rap, our first single, entered the charts,” said Michael. “To celebrate, I’m releasing my new song.”
The reunion will reportedly include a brief tour, performing hits like “Wham! Rap (Enjoy What you Do)” and “Young Guns (Go for It!),” along with a slight possibility for new material released in order to promote it.
However, before you get too excited…
According to The Guardian, who spoke with George Michael’s spokesperson, there is no truth to the comeback rumors. The article calls out the claim of a Wham! "a one-off pop extravaganza" as a hoax.
