Greyson Chance is gaining momentum as a new pop star to watch and proving he's well on his way to becoming the next Justin Bieber meets Justin Timberlake meet the Jonas Brothers.
Chance first rocketed to fame after Ellen Degeneres got ahold of of a youtube video of Chance performing a cover of Lady Gaga's hit song "Paparazzi."Now, 14-year-old Chance is signed to Ellen Degeneres first record label and this Friday he debuts the music video for "Hold on 'Til The Night," the title track from his recently released debut album of the same name.
Stereotude was at the shoot for the music video and got the scoop on Chance's unique rise to fame, crazy fans, the concept behind the video, and his burgeoning acting career.
Stereotude: Describe the concept behind the video for "Hold On 'Til The Night":
Greyson Chance: The concept of the video is... enlightening, we’re making people hold onto the night... it really means you want to take a risk. Take a risk, don’t be so afraid all the time, you know, go out there and hold onto the night and so that’s what we’re really describing in the video.
ST: You hired real kids for the music video and not actors?
Chance: I got to pick the kids that were in the video and I told them you’re not actors today you’re going to be real kids and they came in their own clothes, no makeup, no hair, no nothing and we really made them look like real kids so it’s going to be very exciting.
ST: Is there a certain someone, or maybe a girl that you dedicated this song to?
Chance: There is, but I’m not going to say who it is.
ST: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Chance: Hopefully on another video set doing the same thing, to a different song.
ST: You've appeared in a few episodes of "Raising Hope" - would you ever leave music to act?
Chance: Well you know I’ve been acting on 'Raising Hope' but I’m going to keep a pretty good balance of music and acting. That’s my favorite TV show in the world and I love going there, you’ll definitely be seeing more of me this spring season.
ST: Ellen Degeneres discovered you on youtube?
Chance: It was really completely crazy, I posted the video one day and then literally about, I want to say two weeks later I really just got this huge following, Ellen called and was like you know come out here blah, blah, blah and it just kept on growing and growing and growing and now I’m on sets and tomorrow I’m leaving for Asia and I’m doing a huge promo run there. My life has changed completely but it’s been an amazing change and I’ve been really enjoying it.
ST: Who would be your dream music collaboration?
Chance: You know, it could be [Lady] Gaga, it could be Taylor Swift. I just love music, it could be anybody.
ST: Tell us about your craziest fan story?
Chance: One morning we were in Houston and we were probably rolling out around 2am and all of a sudden bang, bang, bang on the door and then just bang, bang, bang on the door and I’m like 'yo, first of all, how are you even back here at the bus and second of all why are you banging on the door.' She just kept banging and banging and banging and then finally one of my managers went over and was like 'girls be quiet!' Then they finally left but they were very cute, they were very sweet.
