Jack White might be a household name in the indie rock world, but the Detroit native added a notch in his belt today when his debut solo album Blunderbuss won a number one spot on the Billboard 200 chart.
According to Nielsen SoundScan, Blunderbuss has sold 138,000 this copies week, bumping Lionel Richie’s Tuskegee from number one.
Despite his success with previous projects - including the White Stripes, the Raconteurs, and the Dead Weather - White has never before graced the top of the throne.
Previously, the highest the “Seven Nation Army” singer had charted was a number two standing with the 2007 White Stripes's album Icky Thump, which sold 223,000 on its debut week. Despite his distorted, blaring guitar and Meg White’s stomping drums on the studio album, Icky Thump never managed to thump its way past Bon Jovi’s number one Lost Highway.
Blunderbuss features a track list that speaks the metaphoric woes of heartbreak, sticking to an acoustic-heavy sound, unusual for White. But apparently it’s working.
Along with his solo success, White’s label Third Man Records has collaborated with the musical talents likes of Karen Elson, Mildred and the Mice, and Conan O'Brien. The rocker is also slated to score the soundtrack for the 2013 blockbuster The Lone Ranger, starring Johnny Depp.
Coming in behind Blunderbuss was Adele’s 21 at number two with 84,000 (up from #3), Lionel Richie’s Tuskegee at number three with 78,000 (down from #2), and One Direction’s Up All Night at number four with 50,00 (up from #5).
Along with Blunderbuss, other new arrivals to the list this week are Lee Brice’s Hard 2 Love at five, country’s Kip Moore’s Up All Night (maybe people bought it thinking it was One Direction?) at number six, and The Wanted’s self titled US debut at number seven.
