“Platinum Hit” is a new series on Bravo that unlike shows like “American Idol” and “The Voice” where contestants sing covers of popular songs, “Platinum Hit” pits aspiring songwriters against each other as they are forced to create new songs each week.
Jackie Tohn from Platinum Hit is the chick with the Zooey Deschanel bangs who can rap, play the guitar and has a quirky folksy sound. No stranger to the reality talent scene, she made it to LA during season 8 of American Idol.
Each week the contestants are forced to write different genres of music, but Tohn tells Stereotude her style is most influenced by artists like “Indigo Girls, Tim Christianson, Fiona Apple, Alanis Morrissette, Stevie Wonder, James Taylor, Paul Simon.”
“Platinum Hit” is no “Bachelor Pad” says Tohn, “[It’s] three people living in one loft…it was brutal…living with conflicting personalities who are competition. I don’t imagine I’m very easy to live with.”
Like any reality show where you are forced to cohabitate with your competition, tensions run high. Tohn tells Stereotude, “Team writing…I went in thinking it was going to be like a project runway for songwriters, but then your in this space with people that are nuts, that your forced to live with and then you have 3 hours to write a song from scratch with them.”
Aside from the recording contract and other prizes that await the winner of the show, Jackie says the exposure for her as her as a singer/songwriter is really worth it when going on the road for her own shows. “After the TV exposure, you show up to cities and there are people there that already have awareness about you and it’s really helpful.”
As an alumni of “American Idol,” she only has praise for the hit show, “I do watch, I’m obsessed.”
