Last night at the Beacon Theatre in New York City Jay-Z gave a surprise performance of his hit song “Empire State of Mind” during YouTube’s Upfront presentation.
A representative for YouTube walked onstage and with very little enthusiasm announced, “Please welcome our special guest.”
The screen went black and images of Jay-Z were broadcast onto the wall, the audience, full of mostly investors and advertisers quietly applauded, then Jay-Z walked out and everyone went nuts, proving that Jay-Z is truly everyone’s favorite rapper.
It was only fitting that he would perform “Empire State of Mind” for his surprise performance in New York.
According to Rap-Up other scheduled performances for the YouTube Upfront event included appearances from Pharrell, Russell Simmons, Neon Trees, and Flo Rida.
Jay-Z is partnering with YouTube to expand his current “Life & Times” channel. The channel currently features docu-style videos about music, art, and fashion. Jay-Z intends to put $200 million into the channel and expand its original programming.
Eventually, YouTube will become a destination to “watch TV” rather than a hub for uploading cat videos.
In addition to Jay-Z’s life and times channel, YouTube announced that it will launch “three new channels dedicated to original content about the lives of women, a spotlight on U.S. Olympians and one that comes from the organizers of the Tribeca Film Festival.”
