Jay-Z might be waking up in the doghouse this morning. The Brooklyn rapper went head-to-head with his wife Beyonce for Best Video at the 2012 BET Awards and he came out on top.
Watch The Throne, Jay-Z’s collaboration with Kanye West, was honored with the top video of the year for “Otis.” The video was one of five nominees, two of which were from The Throne and two videos from Beyoncé. It was an even match, but in the end Jay-Z reigned supreme.
Award presenters Jamie Foxx and Django Unchained co-star Kerry Washington took the stage to announce the winner. Acknowledging the husband-wife faceoff, Foxx teased the hip-hop couple who sat in the front row.
“It’s going to be an argument at the crib…” he said, drawing it out. “Trying to see who’s the hottest in the household, baby…”
Upon the announcement that, in fact, Jay-Z was the hottest thing year, Beyoncé reacted by playfully punching her beau. Overall, she was a good sport, though, hugging and kissing him and clapping as the duo took the stage.
Jay-Z kept the laughs coming, poking fun at Kanye. As the rapper began, “I want to thank BET for…” Jay-Z cut in, mocking Kanye’s interruption of Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the 2009 VMAs.
“Excuse me Kanye, I’ma let you continue, but…” Jay-Z said.
The crowd reacted in laughter and applause. Kanye, embarrassed, laughed it off and Jay-Z gave him a big hug showing off the true hip-hop family spirit between the two.
Falling short to “Otis” was The Throne’s “N****s in Paris,” Beyoncé’s “Countdown” and “Love on Top,” and Usher’s “Climax.”
