Everyone’s favorite kisser-and-teller, John Mayer, has undergone throat surgery to remove an enlarged nodule just above his vocal cord.

“I wanted to give you an update on the granuloma just above my vocal cord,” Mayer said via his Tumblr. “I had surgery this afternoon to remove it and am now on complete vocal rest for a month or more. It’s been a very long process in waiting to see if time was an alternative to surgery, but even given two weeks' voice rest (along with many other approaches), there was no change for the better."

Mayer first announced he had the non-cancerous lesion back in September, when he cancelled a series of scheduled concerts. He also had to push back the release of his latest album. And while the setback is obviously frustrating, it actually helped Mayer appreciate his talent even more.

"I should be frustrated but I can't seem to stop thinking about beautiful things," he wrote. "I never thought I'd be wishing I could do what I love again; I stay in at night, picking guitar parts off of records and dreaming of playing on the big stage."

I’m really impressed. Not only that he’s remaining so humble, but also that he made it through three sentences without mentioning anyone he’s had sex with.

"The only difference between now and when I was 18 is that now I have this beautiful, meaningful record waiting for me when I can sing it,” Mayer continued.

Mayer’s fifth album, Born and Raised, was originally set to be released in October, but is now postponed until 2012. Mayer says the album is complete as far as music recording, song selection, and in some cases mixing.” so the only thing left is some tracks that are missing his vocals. He’s still unsure of how long he’ll be out, but will wrap it up as soon as he gets the okay from his doctors.

“Until then I'll be spending time writing and composing more music and kicking an empty soup can around the West Village.”

Last week, Mayer celebrated his 34th birthday. To celebrate, his fans from around the world put together a music video for him. Fans from twenty different countries left messages and photos for the singer. Mayer thanked them for the gesture, writing:

“Thanks to those who sent birthday wishes, especially those who contributed to the Happy Birthday video… I streamed it to TV and let it run like a music playlist for the whole 30 minutes on my birthday. You’re the best.”
