In her new video “Roar,” Katy Perry is not becoming one with the jungle. Rather, the jungle is becoming one with Katy Perry.
The songstress borrows a Hollywood storyline that is two parts Tarzan and one part Temple of Doom in order to put a glitter-pop filter over the untamed wilderness and its inhabitants.
Rather than writing a summary, here’s the one Rolling Stone wrote. The utter gravity in the tone here is pretty amazing:
“Perry and a selfie-taking explorer navigating through the jungle following a plane crash. He's mauled by a tiger, leaving Perry to fend for herself amongst the beasts of the wild. She quickly takes to her new environment, and summons a swarm of fireflies, brushes an alligator's teeth and makes a spear fashioned from the heel of a black pump. The video reaches its apex when Perry has a face-to-face standoff with a tiger and emerges as the alpha.”
(The highlight of which is most definitely the tiger rocking a “Kitty Purry” collar.)
In under 24 hours, the video has already generated over three million views and has intelligent YouTube responses like “OMG i luv dis vid its so awsum and i luv da colors,” and “I F*CKING WANT HER BOOBS LOL.”
Perry has had a fantastic week, though. In addition to a “Good Morning America” appearance/album art premiere, she’s sitting at the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 spot. Outlets are quick to point out that she dethroned Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” in order to achieve this.
