Happy Birthday, Madonna! 5 Pop Stars Inspired By The Queen
Check Rolling Stone, the Billboard Hot 100 records, hell—even check the Guinness World Records. Madonna is, and always has been, the Queen of Pop. Not only was she the face of 80s pop music, she’s still making hits. Guinness has dubbed her as the world’s most successful female recording artist of all time. And on March 10, 2008, Madonna was inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of fame. The woman is right up there with the Beatles.

And aside from all of those statistics, there’s the simple fact that you can’t listen to Express Yourself without dancing. So put on your fishnet gloves and check out these five pop stars who are inspired by Madonna’s legacy.

Rihanna: Rihanna has said: “I think that Madonna was a great inspiration for me, especially on my earlier work. If I had to examine her evolution through time, I think she reinvented her clothing style and music with success every single time. And at the same time remained a real force in entertainment in the whole world.

Rihanna’s bold outfit choices are reminiscent of Madonna’s 80s pop fashion. Rihanna dresses daring but sexy, and Madonna perfected that to a T in the 80s. A few months back, Rihanna even showed up to a concert in Madrid sporting a cone bra. That has Madonna written all over it.

Britney: Britney and Madonna have shared more than an onstage kiss. Britney might have held her own in the pop music world over the years, but she still borrows from Madonna on occasion. In 2008, at the Bambi Awards in Germany, Britney wore a top hat with a sheer top, black bra and panties and fishnets. It was the exact same outfit Madonna wore on her Sticky & Sweet tour.

Christina Aguilera: Aguilera has been compared to Madonna throughout her career, but it’s hard for any modern pop star not to be compared to the Queen. But in Aguilera’s video, Not Myself Tonight, she basically channels Madonna. She sports that short, platinum blonde ‘do that Madonna was known for, and her outfits are almost identical to Madonna’s back in the day. Christina’s dominatrix outfit in the video is strikingly similar to Madonna’s in Human Nature. And the snippets in Aguilera’s video of her at the top of the stairs dressed as a German schoolmaster seem to pay homage to Express Yourself.

Ke$ha: Ke$ha has a lot of influences. She lists Beck, Queen, Johnny Cash, and, of course, Madonna as inspiration for her songwriting. And Madonna is apparently a big Ke$ha fan. Ke$ha’s in-your-face attitude is particularly reminiscent of Madonna’s persona in 80s pop.

Lady Gaga: And of course we couldn’t finish this list without talking about Lady Gaga. You don’t have to be a Madonna expert to see that Gaga basically models her career off of the 80s pop star. So much so, that one of Lady Gaga’s biggest criticisms is that she’s a rip-off. Born This Way is blasted for being too similar to Express Yourself, and Gaga has lifted Madonna’s fashion choices more than a few times.
