If you thought that Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj were putting their little “American Idol” feud behind them, you’d be wrong. All kinds of wig-wearing, skirt-too-tight, over spray-tanned wrong.
These two sat together for the Television Critics Association winter press tour yesterday and unlike the lipstick Nicki wore to its panel, it was more like the lipstick Mariah wore: Not the prettiest.
Just the day before, Mariah’s sit down with Barbara Walters for “Nightline” aired, which featured the singer addressing the “AI” spat, calling the work environment “unsafe.” When Barbara asked if she had heard Nicki’s diss track yet, Mariah just eye-rolled, “Didn’t know she sang, I thought she rapped, or whatever.” Icy, icy burn.
This is probably enough to explain why Nicki didn’t crack a single smile at the start of the panel, a silence that was noticeably deafening. Midway through, the four judges were asked to say something nice about the other, which Nicki kicked off by complementing her rival saying, “I say nice things about Mariah all the time. She’s one of my favorite artists.”
Mariah refused to pick up that olive branch, instead completely glazing over the question and making it all about her. “I’m grateful for anything nice she or anyone would say about me,” she said, then began talking about her sinus infection. Classic Mimi passive aggressive.
It finally came to a heated, awkward back and forth snapping match when Mariah claimed their feud was “all one-sided.” Nicki quickly cut her off with a “No, it wasn’t,” launching them into a downward spiral of talking over one another. Clearly there are still unresolved issues here, sure to spill over into the live shows.
This blatant bout of PDA (Public Display of Aversion) that’s surely not at all for ratings, wasn’t caught forever immemorial on camera (so no GIFS, unfortunately), but there are many still photos from the Q&A to accompany every piece of salacious commentary from the attending media’s live-tweets.
The two got along just fine in the beginning with Mariah and Nicki seated safely away from each other, separated by country singer and judges’ panel security guard Keith Urban. However, body language is everything and Nicki’s was fuming with every synonym for “annoyed.”
Apparently, lots of shade was thrown, adding yet another chapter to the book it appears they’ve been writing together lately, “The Comprehensive Guide to Frenemy Etiquette in the 21st Century.” See, cooperation!
