Picking the Top 5 Christmas songs is hard. Do you choose the old standards that they play in Starbucks? Do you pick the ones that have been sung on Glee? Or do you choose the ones that sell the most singles because people like Justin Bieber have re-recorded them? No matter how you choose 'em, there are many awesome Holiday songs, but here's a sampling of some of the best Holiday songs ever.
"White Christmas" - This song was popularized by Bing Crosby in the movie "Holiday Inn" and must be included on this list because it is the best-selling Christmas single of all time, selling 50 million copies. Yowza. Irving Berlin wrote the song and calls it "the best song that anybody's ever written!" He was saying that about his own song, mind you.
"Oh, Holy Night" - This song deserves to make it on the list based on how hard it is to sing. While every elementary school teaches their kids how to sing "Jingle Bells" because it's in the key of "flat" - for some reason, as kids, we are all expected to learn how to sing this song even though it was basically created for Celine Dion and Mariah Carey. In case you were wondering, both those divas have versions of the song on their respective albums.
"Happy Christmas (War Is Over)" - While this song was originally written by John Lennon as a protest song for the Vietnam War, it turned into one of the most popular Christmas standards ever. Also, can you really expect a member of The Beatles to release a Holiday song and it NOT become super popular? I mean, as soon as Lady Gaga writes an original Christmas song it's going to become the new Jingle Bells. And yes, I just said Lady Gaga is as popular as John Lennon. You can punch me later.
"Baby, It's Cold Outside" - This song made the list only because of how many times it's been remade by everyone from Ella Fitzgerald, to the gay boys on Glee, to Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson. Also, no-one ever seems to mention how creepy the lyrics truly are. Some chick really wants to leave this guys house and he's basically locked her inside but is blaming it on the snow outside. Also, the dude is giving her drinks and the girl is like "Hey what's in this drink."
"All I Want For Christmas" - You've got to hand it to Mariah Carey for writing the most recent Holiday song to become an instant classic. While most Christmas songs were written "in the olden days," like when sleighs were not just a "Holiday" thing but a "before cars" thing, Kudos to Mariah Carey for making a modern Christmas classic.
