Muse Song 'Survival' Unveiled as Official Song of Olympics 2012

The Olympics are gonna rock this year… And that’s not just an expression. They’re actually going to rock.

“Survival” by Muse has been unveiled as the official song of the 2012 Games in London. The rock trio made up of Christopher Wolstenholme, Dominic Howard, and frontman Matthew Bellany will add the honor to their growing legacy, which features MTV and Grammy Awards.

The song choice will play as athletes enter the stadium, leading up to the medal ceremony. It will also serve as a theme song for international TV coverage of the games.

Muse announced the news in an official statement on their site:

“We are very excited to announce that a Muse song, ‘Survival,’ has been selected by the London Olympic committee to be the main official song for the London 2012 Olympic Games.”

Having written the song with the Olympics in mind, the group went on to say that they were honored to represent what the games mean across the globe.

Of course with such an enormous task and so many people involved, fans and critics alike are chiming in with their opinions. Some, like music writer Simon Price, feel the band captures the “Nietzschean spirit of the Olympics.” Others take the snobby approach, like critic David Stubbs who simply writes the decision off as “monstrous.”

Love it or hate it, this song has one thing: range.

The song begins with an extended intro of strings before moving into a pop beat, backed by synths. Then comes and lyrical pattern:

“Race / Life's a race / But I'm gonna win / Yes, I'm gonna win/ And I'll light the fuse/ And I'll never lose / And I choose to survive/ Whatever it takes”

Distorted guitar riffs take over as the song steps up in a gradual crescendo. It finishes strong with a triumphant chant “Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight! … "Win! Win! Win! Win!"

It’s like a sample platter of all that is musical awesomeness!

What athlete wouldn’t want to run, jump, and swim to the anthem? It’s pure Muse and it’s pure sport.

If you’re not familiar with Muse’s excessive catalog of original material because you’ve been too busy watching Justin Bieber’s “Boyfriend” over and over on YouTube, don’t fret… We’ve got you covered.
