Rick Springfield's “Impromptu” Subway Karaoke Performance

The shadow of ‘80s pop star Rick Springfield flickered against a New York subway station on Thursday in a woebegone attempt to gain traction for his latest album.

Looking like someone who just heard of the YouTubes, the 63-year-old rock-pop singer of “Jessie’s Girl” fame led a karaoke singalong in a couple NYC train stations that attracted a crowd of commuters, many of who recorded the two appearances on their smart phones to memorialize this history-in-the-making moment (JK) forever, or at least until their devices runs out of media space.

In some of them, you can almost see his “Will Sing For Food” sign just off-camera...

On his Facebook page, Rick mapped out his route for fans writing, “Rick’s making you late to work in NYC starting at the 34th Street subway station! Then uptown on the 1 train with more stops! Follow Rick on Twitter for real time updates! #ricknyc”.

Overall, the videos’ combination of nostalgia hit, transparent 21st century marketing, and dad glasses are kind of cute-embarrassing in the same way your dad dropping in to your bedroom when you’re having a sleepover to have an super casual conversation about “what’s hip” with your friends is.

While not “impromptu,” it certainly is a random sight to see Rick strumming up his greatest hit(s) like a panhandler on a Wednesday morning. His album Songs for the End of the World is out this week and we can’t wait to see irreverent guerilla marketing tactic will Rick surprise us with next?! Planking??!!?
