Anna Hathaway has just signed on to play the part of Fantine in the new movie musical, Les Miserables. For those of you who think Glee is a musical, let me educated you. Les Miserables is a musical created in the 1980's based off a book of the same name. It has gone on to become one of the most successful musicals in history.
Now, the musical is getting the film treatment and Hugh Jackman has already signed on to star in the flick. The musical will be directed by Tom Hooper who is hot off his Oscar nod for directing The King's Speech.
This will not be the first time that Jackman and Hathaway have sang together. During Hugh Jackman's Oscar hosting stint in 2009, Anne made a guest appearance and sang with Jackman, wowing audiences that she was hiding that singing voice all this time.
She then sang again last year when she hosted the Oscar's with James Franco, but by that point the excitement of hearing her sing had worn off and everyone was like blah blah whatever. However, the song she sang at the 2011 Oscars was "On My Own" aka the hit track from Les Miserables, and during the performance she serenaded Hugh Jackman who sat in the front row. Now it's all making sense.
Apparently, Amy Adams had been campaigning for the role but Jackman has been pushing for Hooper to hire Hathaway instead. According to Jackman, Hathaway was "set to take on the role."
Rusell Crowe is attached to play Inspector Javert, the antagonist. Can he sing? Who cares, he's Rusell Crowe. Helena Bonham Carter and Geoffrey Rush who also worked with Tom Hooper on The King's Speech are also set to appear in the film. Bonham Carter has experience in movie musicals, having appeared in Tim Burton's adaptation of "Sweeney Todd."
For the roles of Eponine and Cosette it calls for younger female talent, and the movie has apparently been considering Hayden Panettiere, Miranda Cosgrove, Lucy Hale and Emma Watson. I'm rooting for Emma Watson, though she once publicly stated that she can't sing? Well, I guess there's always autotune?
Les Miserbales is a story set in 19th Century France in the years prior to the French Revolution. Anne Hathaway would play a prostitute.
In other Les Miserables news, Justin Bieber has been approached to play a role in the stage production of the musical when it comes to Canada. The show's producer is trying to get the word out to Mr. Bieber, "You're going to have a completely new, all-Canadian production opening at the Royal Alex in July, 2012. I would love to hear Justin Bieber sing 'Empty Chairs at Empty Tables'. Please spread the word that he'd be more than welcome in the show."
