The song is called “Right By My Side” and is a breezy mid-tempo R&B-meets-dance track that seems more like a Rihanna track than a Nicki Minaj song. Maybe Rihanna passed on this single before it landed with Nicki Minaj? Sloppy seconds? Sure.
Nicki reserves her signature rap for the very end of the song, otherwise she spends the majority of the song in dreamy mid-tempo sing/talk nonsense that I think Nicki is getting a little too used to. I’m just saying, we LOVED Nicki Minaj as that fierce female on Kanye West’s “Monster” track or on Trey Songz, “Bottoms Up” but since then, Nicki has been too laid back with everything.
In this song, she sings sweetly over this synch track with sappy lyrics like, “Pay attention/I’m pouring out my heart/Oh Boy” and also, “I’m not living right/If you’re not by my side.”
Ughh, gag. Lil Kim is rolling in her grave. Oh, Lil Kim is still alive? Whatever, you know what I mean.
Chris lends his signature vocals, as he is the go-to guy for R&B/pop collaborations. Actually, this song reminds me a lot of Brown’s 2007 duet with Jordin Sparks, “No Air.” It’s got that same breathy, pop/synch vibe, all courtesy of auto-tune.
This song is perfect for summer and at the very least has a cool beat. I dunno, maybe I’ll listen to this on the treadmill.
