The teenage British pop band One Direction is speaking up about their pay packages.
According to publication The Sun, Niall Horan made a courageously snide comment about music giant Simon Cowell.
“Simon Cowell is tight. That's why he's so successful - he's able to keep his money to himself,” said Horan. “We're paid in jelly beans."
The comment comes after reports that Cowell’s label Syco Records gave 1D a $10 million bonus for their continued success both in the UK and in the United States; each of the five-member group pocketing $2 million.
1D currently holds the record as the first UK band ever to land a number one spot on the US Billboard 200 countdown with their 2011 debut album Up All Night.
The five-piece set initially came to be as a product of Britain’s “X Factor.” Along with Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles, Liam Payne, and Zayn Malik had initially been rejected as solo artists, but ended up finishing in third place as a group in the show’s 2010 run.
Despite their success, 1D is constantly working to keep their sound fresh. Along with taking notes from legendary artists like the Beatles, the band is starting to write their own tracks for a stronger impact.
"We're always writing on the road and in hotels and airports,” said Styles. "We don't ever want our music to sound like a 40-year-old man in an office has written it and given it to us to perform."
We can’t wait to see what exciting things the future holds for the guys of 1D! Hopefully Simon isn’t too upset.
