When Zayn Malik, the 19-year-old One Direction band member, tweeted “Don’t judge me” in reference to the Chris Brown tune he’s been jamming to lately, judgment he did receive of the highest order: One Directioners.
Zayn tweeted the following…
Don't judge me, big tune from Chris brown love that song ATM ! :)

…and it provoked a push back of @-s from less than supportive fans.
Some of the more exemplary comebacks from listeners who don’t share Zayn’s taste in iTunes library? “No, definitely judging you.” “How about you abandon Chris Brown & listen to more Frank Ocean. “Chris Brown makes me realize that no matter how much I mess up, I’ll be forgiven if I dye my hair blonde and get 100 tattoos.” Feisty!
Even with this negative sentiment surrounding Zayn’s affection for the controversial R&B singer, it’s been retweeted approximately 39,341 times and received 28,955 favorites, so it didn’t ruffle everyone’s thumbs.
At the core of all this tension is the ongoing debate over whether or not you can separate the music from the person and support one without supporting the other. For anyone who has seen a boyband narrative play out to its demise (NYSNC), Zayn is like the Justin Timberlake of the group, with an appreciation for pop and R&B and will clearly go in that direction musically when he inevitably has a solo career. Anyway, Zayn, if you ever make it out alive from this scuffle, good luck with that!
