As NBC’s “Hurricane Sandy: Coming Together” Benefit Concert showed, the power of music can unite a country, urge aid, and raise funds where it’s most needed. Other musicians have followed suit in their own ways—Rihanna turned her Unapologetic preview party into a Sandy fundraiser, Dave Matthews Band dedicated their New Jersey set to relief efforts, and Madonna stripped for donations at a New York show (bless her).
For season 10 “American Idol” contestant Pia Toscano the cause hits very close to home, being she’s originally from the Howard Beach, New York area. On an uplifting duet with singer-songwriter Jared Lee, the two fittingly cover Coldplay’s “Fix You”. Here’s her message on the track’s SoundCloud:
“I have been devastated by the destruction that Hurricane Sandy caused in my hometown and equally inspired by all of the amazing people who have come together to help those affected. My voice is the only way I knew how to give back. This song originally written and recorded by Coldplay really spoke to me and my friends. Special thanks to Jared Lee & The Underdogs who have helped make this all possible. Please take a listen, to this cover of Fix You that Jared Lee and I have done, I hope you all like it. I encourage everyone to give back to these victims however they know how. @Redcross is one place to start. Txt REDCROSS to 90999 ($10 donation) or visit www.redcross.org”
