Rihanna to Guest Judge on X-Factor

The X-Factor is working overtime to make sure that nobody thinks it's just American Idol Part 2.

Simon Cowell has tapped Rihanna to appear as a guest judge. Guest judges appear on the show to help the regular judges decide which contestants the judges should mentor.

While the "Guest Judge" position seems more like a marketing ploy than anything else (Does Simon Cowell really need Rihanna's help deciding who can and cannot sing? Whatever) the gimmick has proved very popular on the UK format.

Simon Cowell has already announced that Mariah Carey will be his guest judge, so Rihanna will mentor the judge LA Reid, who signed Rihanna to his label back in 2005 when he was the CEO of Island Def Jam Music Group. Rihanna performed on the UK X Factor last year and according to TMZ, she "loved doing the UK finale last year" so much that she came back for more.

Rihanna will make her appearance on the show during the "judges houses" portion of the show as each of the judges are given one category to mentor: young guys, young girls, older singers and groups.

The X Factor finally makes its US TV debut in a two-hour two-night series premiere on Wednesday, September 21 and Thursday, September 22.

The show just unveiled an 8-minute trailer for the show which features the judges stepping off of helicopters and walking in slow motion on rooftops like they are the reincarnation of "Destiny's Child."

This new preview features never-before-seen footage and an exclusive first look at the auditions from Los Angeles and Seattle.

The new trailer is the most drama-filled thing I've ever seen on Youtube. Simon Cowell wears a grey v-neck while the music from "Shutter Island" plays in the background and Paula Abdul stumbles around a helicopter pad as choirs of angels sing. Nothing makes sense and yet it makes perfect sense.

The preview has contestants giving their emotional stories while the judges and audience cry harder than if they were forced to watch a Youtube video of a three-legged puppy try to save a kitten with a class eye from a hotel fire.

I'm expecting the X-Factor to win an Academy Award from that trailer alone. Is that possible? Nope.

In other X-Factor news, Jennifer Hudson will be Kelly Rowland's mentor/guest judge/extra baggage/whatever on the UK version X Factor, which has currently been underway.
