Studdard filed the papers in Alabama, citing "irreconcilable differences."
A rep for the Idol winner confirmed: "Ruben and Zuri have gone their separate ways."
Studdard married Surata Zuri McCants back in 2008, five years after his big win on American Idol. The two do not have any children together. They met when Studdard was signing albums in a supermarket, in case you had any concerns that she might have married him for his fame.
Ruben's lawyer, Byron Perkins, said:
"Ruben Studdard and Zuri McCants Studdard have separated, and they are in the process of seeking a dissolution of their marriage. They each request the public respects their privacy during this trying time in their lives."
The Birmingham, Alabama native might be going through some rough times, but he's not letting it get in the way of his charity work. Studdard will make the rounds in his hometown over the weekend, showing up to a fundraiser on Friday and a marathon on Sunday. Both are to benefit his charitable foundation. I'm guessing the charity is: "American Idol Stars People Forgot About." Kidding, kidding. We all love our Velvet Teddy Bear.
Perkins added: "We are going full steam ahead with the event this weekend."
Studdard went up against Clay Aiken on American Idol's second season, in 2003. He scored only 143,000 votes more than Aiken. Studdard topped the charts with his debut album, Soulful.
In 2010, Studdard appeared on the Wendy Williams Show to discuss his weight loss:
"I've never had an issue or problem with the way I looked or how I felt about myself. But one day I just decided that I wanted to something different. When I turned 28, I looked in the mirror, and I was like, 'Man I want to be a different person'."
Well, that's depressing.
Studdard continued: "I found a way, I went to vegetarianism about two years ago. About six months ago I decided to be completely vegan. And I work out. I have a trainer who works with me three days a week."
He continued: "I don’t eat any meat, fish, any dairy, any eggs. Nothing with a parent. But I cook everything. I learned how to cook all the great vegan food."
As a result, Studdard lost a whopping 70 pounds. He recently signed with Shanachie Entertainment and is supposed to have an album in the works.
