Serj Tankian, best known as the frontman for the band System Of A Down is working on his next solo project in a new self-produced third album that he’s working on at his own Serjical Strike Studios in LA.
Even though Serj is describing 2011 and the “busiest, most productive year of my life so far,” he still managed to write and record all the material on his next album.
The album, “Harakiri” he says is unlike any of his previous projects with or without System Of A Down.
“The record is different than any I've made as a solo artist,” says Serj, “It is much more driving and punk oriented with influences ranging from goth to electronic to 80's vibes, dynamically heavy rock to epic melodic songs. Lyrically, it spans the gauntlet of themes from personal, political and philosophical to spiritual, humor and love.”
Not only is the music new and different, he recorded the album in an unconventional manner.
“I used the Apple iPad as a songwriting instrument to sketch out three of the songs on the record. We must trick ourselves into writing in different ways to get unexpected results," says Serj.
Aside from his new album, Serj had a busy year. His musical “Prometheus Bound” opened at the Oberon Theater at Harvard. He released his second poetry book. He toured with System of a Down in three different continents. He performed with the Opera Orchestra in Armenia and did his first ever concert in Lebanon. Oh, he also recorded four records last year.
So yeah, Serj is having the best year ever.
