Yesterday, Taylor Swift teased us with her upcoming album’s title track “Red” on “Good Morning America.” Then early this morning, she premiered the song in full at the midnight hour on iTunes, and it’s definitely a more country rock guitar-jangled and passion-fueled counterpart to the ballad she revealed last Monday, “Begin Again.”
“Loving him is like driving a new Maserati down a dead end street,” the singer sings with frustration in the first verse, quickly setting up a road map for the rest of the song that’s slightly more complicated and grown up than the high school story book narratives of “You Belong to Me” and “Love Story.”
She paints her emotions in the chorus, in an effort to make sense of and celebrate them:
Losing him was blue, like I’ve never known
Missing him was dark grey, all alone
Forgetting him was like trying to know somebody you never met
But loving him was red
Loving him was red
Taylor explained on “GMA” the nature of the song and album’s signature color. "I wrote this song about the fact that some things are just hard to forget because the emotions involved with them were so intense and, to me, intense emotion is red."
The country pop singer is previewing new tracks off the album every Monday until the album hits shelves on October 22.
