It was the most predictable circus there ever was: the MTV Europe Music Awards in Frankfurt, Germany where the continent across the Atlantic confirmed what we’re already well aware of here in the states—that if you nominate Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, One Direction, and PSY for anything and allow their internet legions of fans to vote, they’ll end up winning.
Recap: Justin and Taylor walked away with the most wins of the night. Taylor was awarded in three big categories—“Best Female,” “Best Look,” and “Best Live,” whereas Justin secured the titles “Best Male” and “Best Pop.”
Other names who made a Euro splash included Carly Rae Jepsen (“splash,” literally—she crowd surfed during her EMA performance), Korean sensation PSY, Lana Del Rey, and Nicki Minaj, all taking home gold in various categories. In other words, it was a big night for famous stars with teenage fans who put voting for said famous stars on the internet before doing their pre-algebra homework this weekend.
The traveling sideshow-themed tent kicked off the show with an opening performance by Rita Ora, who while more famous in the U.S. for dating Rob Kardashian is actually huge in Europe for singing. The stage then welcomed performances from some of its winners like Carly Rae, in addition to non-winners like No Doubt, The Killers, Pitbull, Muse, and Alicia Keys. The whole spectacle was even hosted by the Queen of Germany herself Heidi Klum.
