Taylor Swift has been named Billboard's 2011 Woman of the Year. At only 21 years old, she's the youngest artist ever to receive the honor. Say what you want about Taylor Swift, but that girl knows how to sell albums and write songs about mundane things that somehow become insane radio hits.
Who knew that songs about sitting on the bleachers in a pair of sneakers and crushing after the quarterback would make you a platinum selling artist? Oh right, Taylor Swift did.
Her latest album "Speak Now" made Billboard's HOT 100 history when 11 songs off the album made it to the Hot 100 chart in a single week. The album also went platinum five-times and is nominated for Top Country Album at the 2011 Billboard Music Awards among several other nominations.
Swift will be granted her award at the Billboard Women in Music event on December 2 in New York. Last years winner was Fergie, of the Black Eyed Peas.
"Taylor has shown the power of good songwriting with music that has transcended genres, and we're thrilled to recognize all of her successes over the past year by honoring her with the Billboard Woman of the Year Award," says Bill Werde, Billboards Editorial Director.
It's true, there's never been a more successful female country to pop crossover artist since maybe Shania Twain.
"At the young age of 21, Taylor has already made a major impact on music and has been an incredible role model for aspiring singer/songwriters and young women everywhere. I look forward to watching her career continue to flourish in the years to come," adds Werde.
Swift is no stranger to Billboard success. She holds the record for most top 10 debuts, with 7 of her songs debuting in the top 10. Also, her self-titled debut album sat on the Billboard 200 chart longer than any other album since 2000.
Her sophomore album, "Fearless" is the longest running No. 1 album by a female country artist in Billboard 200 history. Did I mention she was only 21.
Earlier this year in April, Taylor was named the Entertainer of the Year at the American Country Music Awards. This summer she took home the "Ultimate Choice" award at the 2011 Teen Choice Awards. So basically, Taylor Swift goes to awards shows and is given their best award of the night, probably because she sweeps every category at every awards show otherwise.
She's also nominated for six 2011 CMA Awards, including Entertainer of the Year and I have a hunch she'll probably grab that award too.
